Melaka: Police have advised the public to be wary of a company offering Melaka Datukship and other "VIP" car emblems online. The issue was highlighted on social media by Netizens.

"The Datuk Melaka emblem cannot be sold and it is conferred only on individuals who register with the Melaka Datukship Council," a police spokesman said.

She said the information given by Netizens would be handed to the relevant departments. "The State government or the Melaka Datukship Council (Majlis Datuk-Datuk Negeri Melaka) president must lodge a report."

State Secretary Datuk Naim Abu Bakar said the state government had nothing to do with the sale of the emblems.

"The State is responsible only for the conferment of the titles in con-junction with Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob's birthday. "Those who are dissatisfied can lodge a report."

This is not the first time Melaka is embroiled in bogus Datukship titles issue.

Last December, self-proclaimed Sultan Raja Noor Jan Shah Raja Tuah caused a controversy when he issued a Datukship title to Malay rights activist Abdul Rani Kulup Abdullah.

The issue went viral when Rani, on his Facebook page, was seen posing with a sash and medal with a message proclaiming that he was conferred the award, which purportedly carries the title "Datuk Paduka". State legislative assembly Speaker Datuk Othman Muhamad advised the people not to buy fake car emblems.

"The Melaka Datukship car emblem can be bought only from the Melaka Datukship Council. "Any other emblem bought else-where is not official."

Netizens shared on Facebook a link to a Facebook account named Cars VIP, which offers VIP car emblems, including Malacca Datukship emblem and local council members' emblem.

There were no price tags for the emblems, with the seller asking those interested to send private messages.

The alleged 'Datuk' emblem was seen on the vehicle plate number of the 4WD of the shooting victims in Foh Sang, recently, which was widely circulated on social media.
