Kota Kinabalu: About 500 delegates will congregate in Chiang Mai, Thailand, for the 25th Rotary International (RI) District 3310 Conference with the theme 'Be A Gift To The World' from April 29 to May 1.The District Territories comprise Sabah, Sarawak, Labuan, Malacca and Johor (Malaysia), with Singapore and Brunei Darussalam.

Disclosing this, the Conference Public Relations Officer, Michael Y.S. Tong said the host club that is organising the major annual event is the Rotary Club of Likas Bay (RCLB), under the organising chairmanship of Past President Woo Soo Poo.

"This is because currently, RI District 3310 is under the leadership of District Governor Philip Chong who hails from Kudat and the RCLB. In organising this special event, the Committee has the support of five clubs in Chiang Mai (from RI District 3360)," he said. The current President of RCLB is Dato' John Chee.

According to Tong, participating clubs outside the Territories of District 3310 will include clubs from Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Bangladesh.

RI President's Representative, Past District Governor Edgardo E. Tumangan from the Philippines will be the guest of honour at the opening ceremony.

The keynote speakers are former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, Bhichai Rattakul, who is also a Past Rotary International (RI) President, and former Deputy Prime Minister of Malaysia, Tun Dato' Musa Hitam.

A Member of Parliament for nine terms since 1969 and leader of the Democrat Party, Bhichai has served his country as Foreign Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Speaker of the House of Representatives and President of the Parliament.

He is the recipient of The Rotary Foundation's Distinguished Service Award and Citation for Meritorious Service for his support of its international humanitarian and educational programmes.

During his service in the Malaysian Government, Musa held various positions, including Minister of Home Affairs, Education, Primary Industries and Trade and Industries, and Chairman of the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda).

Currently, he is Chairman of the World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) Foundation, Chairman of the Sime Darby Foundation, Chairman of the International Advisory Panel of CIMB Bank, Chairman of UM Land Bhd, Chairman of the International Selection Panel of the Royal Award on Islamic Finance and member of the Advisory Panels of the Iskandar Development Authority, and The Singapore Forum.

Meanwhile, Conference Organising Chairman, Woo said there are two working committees, one at District 3310-level and the other comprising representatives from the five Rotary Clubs of Chiang Mai.

"Since the conference has been held in Kota Kinabalu quite a number of times, we decided on Chiang Mai for a change.

Last year, the 24th RI District 3310 Conference was held in Kuching, and Penang was the venue in 2014," he said.

Woo, who has made eight trips to Chiang Mai to coordinate the event, said the Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) is supporting the conference in a big way. TCEB is a public organisation tasked with promoting and developing business events in Thailand.

The programme drawn up for the conference includes a spouse schedule, a Rotary exhibition featuring 21 booths, a community service project and a post-conference tour.
