Kota Kinabalu: Acting Deputy Director of the State Education Department, Hjh Maimunah Hj Suhaibul, 55, has been promoted to be the new Director, making her the second Sabah woman to hold the post after Datuk Normah Gagoh. She succeeds Datuk Jame Alip, who retired recently. She received her letter of appointment from the Director-General of Public Service, Tan Sri Mohamad Zabidi Zainal, in Kuala Lumpur, Friday.

Maimunah holds a Bachelor of Science degree (Hons) from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM, 1983), a Diploma in Education from the University of Malaya (1985) and a Master's degree in Education Management from Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS, 2008).

Born in Beluran, Maimunah, the daughter of a headmaster and later district school supervisor, began her teaching career at SMK Taun Gusi, Kota Belud, in 1985.

She was promoted to be Principal of SMK Usukan in 1991 and subsequently served in the same capacity at SMK Sikuati, Kudat, before returning to SMK Usukan as Principal again in 1998.

In 2005, she was appointed as Kota Belud Division Education Officer and became Sector Head in the State Education Department the following year until her elevation to Deputy Director of Education in 2010.

Her spouse Said Andong is the Principal of SMK Taman Ria, Tuaran.

Deputy Minister of Higher Education, Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching, in congratulating Hjh Maimunah Hj Suhaibul, said: "We had the privilege of working together when I helmed the Education Committee of the Sabah Women's Advisory Council.

She served in my Committee for two terms.

"Maimunah took up the responsibility seriously and worked effectively with the team to implement our educational programmes for rural women. I was impressed with her deep commitment and today she is heading the Education Committee."

Given her vast experience as Maimunah has held different positions from being a principal to Head of the School Management Sector and to Deputy Director, Yap said the State Education Department is definitely in good hands.

"I wish her every success in her new and challenging role," she added.

Chairperson of Sabah Women's Advisory Council (MPWS), Datuk Mariati Robert said it has been a good week for women in Sabah.

First, it was Ng Kiat Min who was elevated to be the new Group Managing Director of Suria Capital Holdings Bhd (Suria), a Sabah-based public-listed company, and now Hjh Maimunah.

"We at MPWS are jubilant over their appointments. Maimunah has dedicatedly served as a member of MPWS for three consecutive terms since 2007, and has chaired the Council's Education Committee from 2014. She is a good team player," she said, while expressing gratitude to Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman for having supported her nomination.

Mariati said her appointment augured well for continuity of the Education Committee's outreach programme for the benefit of rural students.
