BANGI: The man who smashed several idols at a Hindu temple in Ipoh Sunday is a doctor who was dismissed from the Ipoh Hospital recently for being of unsound mind, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar. "I believe any sane person will not do such a thing ... and the people should understand this.

The police have met Indian community leaders there and advised them to be rational in facing the situation," he said.

The 29-year-old man had smashed nine idols at a temple in Jalan Hospital in Ipoh at about 5pm Sunday and then driven his car against traffic along Jalan Ghazali Jawi and crashed onto a bus shelter.

The man was taken to Hospital Bahagia in Tanjung Rambutan Monday for a medical examination, Khalid told reporters after a discourse at Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia here.

Meanwhile, the police have confirmed that the man had nothing to do with the Daesh militant group.

Perak Chief Police Officer Datuk Seri Abdul Rahim Hanafi said investigation showed that the man, who had studied abroad, was under psychiatric treatment and did not have any criminal record, he told reporters after the monthly assembly at the Perak Police headquarters Monday.

He warned the people against manipulating the incident into a social media viral issue, saying the police did not want any undermining of public order in Perak. – Bernama
