Chong Wei, Zulfadli advance, Iskandar exits

Kuala Lumpur: Datuk Lee Chong Wei and Zulfadli Zulkiffli advanced to the second round of the Badminton Asia Championship 2016 in Wuhan, China Wednesday.Chong Wei, who is seeded fourth, outclassed Wang Zhengming of China 21-16 and 21-14 in 49 minutes. In the next round, the world number two will be facing Hong Kong shuttler Vincent Wong Wing Ki who defeated Anthony Ginting of Indonesia, 21-18 and 21-6.

Compatriot Zulfadli Zulkiffli also followed Chong Wei into the second round after a hard fought 21-12, 17-21 and 21-18 victory against a Hong Kong player in a match that lasted one hour and 12 minutes. The 2011 world youth champion will be up against Chen Long of China next. Chen Long had whitewashed South Korean Jeon Hyeok Jin 21-4, 21-16.However, Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin was shown the exit when he lost to Tzu Wei Wang of Taiwan in 21-19 and 21-18.On the doubles front, Koo Kien Keat/Tan Boon Heong were stretched to a three-setter by Taiwanese pair Liao Min Chun/Tseng Min Hao before prevailing in 14-21, 21-15 and 21-13.

The Thomas Cup-bound pair next meet Japanese pair Takeshi Kamura/Keigo Sonoda who pulled off a stunning upset against world number three pair Chai Biao/Hong Wei of China, winning in 27-25 and 21-17. The surprise of the day was Malaysian pair Goh V Shem/Tan Wee Kiong going down to Singapore's Terry Hee Yong Kai/Loh Kean in 21-18, 21-23 and 19-21.

As for the top national women's pair Vivian Hoo/Woon Khe Wei, they had an easy path to the second round when the hosts' pair of Tang Yuanting/Yu Yang withdrew.They will be up against third seeded Indonesian pair Nitya Krishinda Maheswari/Greysia Polii, who sent Thai pair Jongkolphan Kititharakul/Rawinda Prajongjai packing in 21-18 and 21-8. – Bernama
