Labuan: The two incidents this month involving mobile phone use while being charged warrant serious attention and investigations to prevent a recurrence of such incident, says consumer activist Datuk Patrick Sindu. He said the incidents, which resulted in the death of a woman, were shocking and disturbing as many people are using mobile phones now.

"The incidents are of grave concern to many and warrant thorough investigations, including whether the Standards and Industrial Research Institute of Malaysia (Sirim), which is the national quality monitoring agency, should tighten checks on such items.

"This is pertinent to prevent substandard accessories or devices, which could be dangerous to use, from flooding the market," he said.

"Substandard electrical goods such as chargers and wires could not only cause harm but also losses.

The authorities should know how best to handle it before more cases are reported," he added.

Patrick voiced his concerns in the wake of an incident in Cheras where a housewife was electrocuted while talking on her mobile phone which was being charged.

Another incident was reported in Sungei Patani also this month when a man suffered a perforated eardrum and other injuries due to his phone exploding while being charged.

Patrick noted that many consumers do not know how to differentiate genuine products from the fake ones.

"They are usually drawn to purchase the cheapest of the products. This, if left unchecked, can result in more tragic incidents."
