Labuan: The blazing sun triggered by the El Nino phenomenon is surely not the perfect time to plant trees, but is there a right time for saving the environment? The hot weather is taking a toll on our plants and trees. Many trees and plants are turning brown and destroyed by bush fires and need to be replaced. Such effort will help keep Labuan cool and green.

With this message, Labuan Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli set the mood for scores of students and teachers at SJK (C) Chung Hwa and Labuan International School (LIS) by bracing the heat and planting trees in conjunction with Earth Day.

The project was spearheaded by the Lions Club Labuan Mandarin, with the joint efforts of the two schools.

Club President Jessica Lim said at SJK (C) Chung Hwa, several trees, including Pandanus Baptistii and Corddyline Fruistcosa, were planted, sponsored by Lion Liew Hsu Kwang with additional from the Club.

To encourage the event at the school was District Governor 308 Az Dato Lawrence Ting, school Principal Yong Kui Chen and Chairman of the Board of Directors Datuk Robert Seah.

At the International School where Rozman took the lead, he was assisted by Principal Zainab Batin, Lions and parents.

Several alpine trees were planted, sponsored by Jessica and Lion Nelson along with the club.

To enliven the occasion, a competition on creating flowerpots using recycled materials was held and the winners are Jewel and Nathanial Chiang. Jessica said the main purpose of the project was to instil awareness on the young on the importance of trees to the environment.
