Tawau: Kalabakan Umno Chief Datuk Seri Abdul Ghapur Salleh rubbished the statement made by Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) that Merotai seat is not Umno's.He said this is because prior to the new delineation for the 2013 election, the seat was known as N.46 Merotai and other than leaders from Usno, he and Datuk Dr. Patawari Patawe from Umno used to be the assemblymen there.

"Although the new delineation caused the seat to be divided, majority of the voters in N.58 Merotai were voters from N.46 Merotai and many of them are Umno members," he said in a statement, Monday.

In the meantime, he left it to the leadership of Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) to make the correct decision on who should stand as BN candidate in Merotai, presently represented by LDP, in the 14th General Election.

The important thing is, he said, as Umno leader in the division, he had already forwarded the wishes of the people in N.58 Merotai, especially Umno members who wish to be represented by an Umno candidate.

"We leave it to Umno and the BN leadership to decide which party would represent Merotai seat. But as what was stated before, if the candidate chosen is not from Umno, we do not want to work hard and campaign for that candidate," he said.

Meanwhile, Puteri Umno Kalabakan Division in a separate statement said they fully support Ghapur in requesting that the seat be returned to Umno.

Its Chief Azlina Michael said if Merotai is represented by Umno, the fate and future of the Malay community and Muslim bumiputera in the area will be better cared for.

"Many of the people here said if the candidate chosen for the next election is not from Umno, they do not want to vote for the candidate," she said.

Azlina added that this is because it is very hard for the people to meet the current assemblyman because he rarely goes to the ground to see the people and find out their problems and needs.

"All these while, only leaders from Umno go to the ground. Therefore, we in Puteri Umno think it is better that the seat be returned to Umno," she said.
