Kota Kinabalu: A 38-year-old Filipino who gave false details in applying for a MyKad was sentenced to 16 months' jail on Tuesday.Hazree Tukal pleaded guilty before Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie to giving false information to an officer at 10.30am on April 25 this year at the National Registration Department (NRD) in the Federal Administrative Complex, here.

The charge stated that because of Hazree's doing, the department had issued a MyKad bearing the serial number 800527-12-5519 under his name.

The offence, under Section 25(1)(b) of the Rules and Regulations Act, carries a jail term of up to three years or a fine of up to RM20,000, or both, on conviction.

In his mitigation, Hazree, who was not represented, asked for a lenient sentence saying he has seven children, one of whom is disabled.

He told the court that he was worried about staying away from his family as he is also sickly.

The court heard that Hazree was arrested when he produced the document at the NRD office where the status of the document was discovered to be not active.

Further investigation revealed that Hazree had obtained the document by giving false details about him and also confessed he was from the Philippines.

After serving the jail sentence, the court ordered Hazree referred to the Immigration Department.

Prosecuting Officer Nurul Fariza Abdullah from the NRD appeared for the prosecution.
