Japanese dominate soft tennis meet

Kota Kinabalu: Japan dominated the Asian Soft Tennis Federation (SEASTF) Malaysia Open & Junior Soft Tennis Championships 2016 held at the Kota Kinabalu Sports Complex over the weekend.They captured a total of 13 gold medals with Kaise Honoka contributing four for her country by winning the women open and girls' 18-under singles, women doubles and girls 18-under doubles, both with Yoshida Shiori.She defeated Yoshida 4-1 for the women's open title while joint third place went to another Japanese Kasai Yuki and Indonesian's Sanger Julia Michelle.

In the men's open singles, Chinese Taipei's Chang Yu Sung and Li Yeh Min prevented another Japanese dominance by making the final which was won by the former 4-0. The joint third place went to Japanese duo Kaname Yonezawa and Oabuke Kaneko while the men's double title was won by Kyousuke and Kaname who beat fellow Japanese Nakebeppu and Tokyu 4-2 in the final with Kaneko, Mizobata from Japan and Flipinos Basanal and Fernanndez in joint third.Indonesia captured both the men's and women team titles. Cambodia took second spot in the men's event followed by Philippines while the second and third place in the women category went to Philippines and Malaysia.Individually, Malaysia did well in the under-10 category with golds coming from Heron Ken Ivan (singles uni-mix 10-under), Khoo Natalie (singles girls 10-under) and the pair of Wong Chloe and Khoo Natalie (doubles uni-mix 10-under).

The winning medals were presented by Asian Soft Tennis Federation officers Kenichi Tanzaki and Tatsuo Kasai together with Korea Soft Tennis President Yun Yong Il as well as Sabah Soft Tennis Association (SSTA) President Richard Shak.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

Meanwhile, organising chairman KK Chin thanked the 10 countries for coming in to support the tournament and also disclosed that both Tanzaki and Kasai were satisfied with the organisation by Sabah Soft Tennis Association and the Asian Soft Tennis Federation promised to support the proposed Asian Junior Soft Tennis Championships next year to be hosted SSTA.

He also expressed gratitude for the support given by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Haji Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan, Sabah Tourism Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun, Kota Kinabalu Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai, sponsors and the SM Shan Tao Likas students who registered as technical support group – all of whom worked to make the soft tennis tournament a success.
