Sabahan bowler strikes gold

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian tenpin bowling team won a gold and two silver medals in the Junior Open final of 39th Malaysian International Open Championship Thursday.Sharifah Nadia Ali Hasan from Sabah won the gold medal after accumulating 1,691 pinfalls in the Junior Women's Open category held at Sunway Mega Lanes, Bandar Sunway, here. Kedah's national junior bowler Nur Ameerahusna Aznel won the silver with 1682 pinfalls while Nadia Pramanik of Indonesia was third (1681 pinfalls).

Meanwhile, Sharifah Nadia described her win as her best achievement in the sport so far.

"Today's win has motivated me to continue to be successful and to bring glory to Sabah in the Malaysia Games (Sukma).

"I had to work hard to win because I was lying third in the seventh game. But in the final game, I registered 249 pinfalls, the highest total, making me the champion," she told reporters here.

Sharifah Nadia,20, hopes to win the gold medal at the 16th Sukma in Sarawak, which will provide her with an opportunity to join the national team.

In the Men's Junior Open category, Tun Al Hakim Tun Hasnul Azam,17, had to settle for the silver with 1702 pinfalls, three shy of the total by gold medallist, Billy M. Islam of Indonesia.

"Frustrated. I did not expect to be lose by three pins. I want to be a champion and must continue my fight in this tournament tomorrow," said the national junior bowler. The bronze medal was won by Muhammad Danial Zheng Yi of Singapore who accumulated 1688 pinfalls.

Tun Al Hakim said he will take part in the first round of the Men's Open Master Final and hopes to prove his prowess by qualifying for the step ladder round on Saturday. – Bernama
