Tawau: A reporter here lost RM8,000 worth of valuables when his house in Jalan Air Panas near here was broken into at about 4am on Thursday. Ismail Lamo, 58, only realised that his Nikon camera, laptop, handphone, a power bank, five pen drives, two hard disk and several documents were missing while having breakfast with his family.

His 52-year-old wife woke up at about 4am and proceeded to clean traces of mud which she found on the floor without suspecting anything amiss as there was nothing unusual about the house.

"After morning prayers, my wife asked me if I went out because the door was ajar, that was when we realised that our house had been broken into," he said.

"We initially thought nothing was missing because our keys were placed neatly on the table, but that was until my wife asked me where was my backpack which I had earlier placed near the stairs as we were having breakfast," he added.

Ismail said he subsequently lodged a police report after sending his wife to the Tawau Airport, as she had to fly to Kota Kinabalu for work purposes.

He said his 25-year-old daughter heard the door being opened at about the time the incident took place, but she ignored it, while he himself woke up at about 1am to get a drink at the kitchen but there was no trace of anything unusual at that time.

He said the burglar could have gained access into the premises by climbing over the back fence before prying open the kitchen door and making off with his backpack through the same access.

"This is the second time my house has been broken into after several years," he said, adding that he lost two handphones during the first break in.

He said another house located along the same route was also broken into last week and that an undisclosed amount of jewellery went missing in that incident.

"Residents believe that there could be more than two people responsible for the break-in and are well versed with the housing area," he said.
