Papar: A sand mining firm with an expired permit operating in Kampung Kogopon, about 40 minutes from the State Capital, here has been ordered to stop work by the Land and Survey Department after it earned the dissatisfaction of nearby residents. The company would only be allowed to operate after it has its Temporary Operating Licence (TOL) renewed.

The Department on Wednesday noted that the sand mining permits of the firm has expired in December last year, and that no Schedule B had been issued to them to continue extraction.

It is understood some sand mining firms have been manipulating a loophole in Schedule B normally issued by the Land Revenue Collector's office even when their licence has expired.

This, however, is not allowed under the State Land Ordinance. In the firm's case, not only the licence had expired, but it continued to operate regardless.

Land and Survey Enforcement Officer Tony Robot in carrying out the instructions of the department's director, noted that it should have ceased operations and wait until the licence was renewed to continue the extraction.

"If you refuse to abide the instruction, we will not hesitate to confiscate all of your machinery," he warned.

Several Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers also visited the company's site office.

The company has earned the dissatisfaction of several landowners and residents nearby over the past months.

Previously, the company also extracted sand from a river bank not within its allowed TOL area, but claimed they were only extracting sand from their own land.

The company also appeared to have little concern for the riparian reserve and instead claimed he sand extracted was still under their land title and within their allowed extraction ground.

Several landowners remained dissatisfied with the company and continued to lodged more complaints against the company.
