Kota Kinabalu: Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd (SESB) will be taking three major initiatives to strengthen power generation capacity in the east coast and cater for future needs. Its Managing Director Ir. Haji Abdul Razak Sallim said it would relocate its 18 megawatt gas turbine from its Melawa station to Lahad Datu.

In addition, it will also repower its generation capability with a 30 megawatt production to be implemented by a private company plus another 60 megawatt from the SESB in Sandakan.

"We hope through these initiatives we can strengthen our generation capacity in the east coast and maintain capacity balance between the west coast and east coast," he told reporters during a media luncheon, Monday.

Abdul Razak said the initiatives are expected to be implemented from 2017 to 2020.

The company is still waiting for government approval to develop a 380 megawatt power plant at POIC Sandakan.

He said the number of consumers in Sabah and the Federal Territory of Labuan has reached more than 516,000 with a maximum load recorded at 923.1 megawatt.

Abdul Razak assured that the company will always remain steps ahead to ensure it provides a service on par with peninsula Malaysia.

"Ironically, SESB is now on the right track to continue moving forward. This is manifested through its SAIDI reading for the financial year 2014/15 at 367.29 minutes. It was the lowest in SESB history," he said.

He pledged that the utility company will not remain complacent but continue to make all improvements necessary to achieve a two-digit SAIDI (System Annualised Interruption Duration Index).

"SESB must therefore be ever ready in designing a strategic plan in facing the ever changing environment.

It must be proactive by constantly innovating not only in its core business but also its non-core business to remain relevant in the industry," he said, adding that a large part of this calls for a good working relationship with the media practitioners.

The three initiatives to be undertaken in the east coast are part of a longer list of efforts taken by the SESB to keep improving its service that include enhancing and strengthening its transmission security, acquiring state-of-the-art SCADA for grid operation and control and accelerating and sustaining distribution reliability.
