Labuan: The Labuan Fire and Rescue Department will launch a helicopter-based unit for any type of emergency response in the duty-free-island here.Labuan Fire and Rescue Department Director Zainal Madasin said a helicopter unit had been approved by the department's headquarters and a suitable area was being identified.

"We are in discussions with Malaysia Airport Berhad (MAB) to be allocated a place for our helicopter.

We hope the Labuan Member of Parliament is able to assist us on the matter," he said, after launching the Labuan level World Firefighters Day celebrations, Tuesday.

Zainal said the helicopter could also assist in mercy flight operations for critical patients to be transferred to hospitals in the mainland and also for search and rescue (SAR) operations or to battle fires in isolated high-risk areas.

Meanwhile, he said the level of non-compliance with the fire prevention regulation under the Fire Services Act 1988 among the oil and gas players here was still minimal.

Zainal said based on inspection statistics, only a few were found to have not complied with the Act and were issued notices of reminder.

"Oil and gas sector had been prioritised in our list as high-risk areas that needed attention.

These areas pose fire risk due to flammable chemical in their warehouses, as such they must fully comply with the act or we will take stern action against them," he said.

He said any expansion work on building or related O&G jobs must be equipped with building plan and application letter for his department's approval.

"Our officer constantly made visits to factories and warehouses. We also hold integrated trainings with O&G players on the fire prevention for their staff. Overall oil and gas players here are in full compliance with our act," he said.

Zainal also said the RM27 million new Fire and Rescue Department headquarters project in Labuan at Rancha-Rancha was running smoothly with progress at 20 to 30 per cent now.
