Ranau: Two poor elderly couples of Kampung Tiang Lama here now live in comfort with the completion of their respective new home, complete with electricity and water supplies, provided under the House Assistance Programme (formerly known as Hardcore Poor People Housing Project).Lusing Geba and his wife Latimah Ganai previously have to endure living in a small old wooden hut, while the other couple, Bugang Kinding and wife Sapol Lambad have been staying at their relative's house.

"(We are) Very happy. We are comfortable with our new home, which has electricity and water supplies," said Lusing, while Latimah just nodded in agreement, when met during Paginatan Assemblyman Datuk Siringan Gubat's visit to officiate at their new three bedroom home recently.

The two couples have been staying in their respective new home since after both completed construction and approved by the District Office, being the project's implementing agency, in late last year.

Siringan, who was pleased to see the couples are comfortable with their respective new home, said theirs are the latest of four homes built in the village since 2010, as part of the Barisan Nasional (BN) Government's hardcore poor eradication effort.

In a leader-and-people gathering held at the village hall later, the Assemblyman said the BN Government will continuously strive to provide necessary basic amenities to all village, in line with the Prime Minister's rural transformation plan.

"Our Prime Minister are now giving more focus on developing the rural area, particularly in Sabah which are still in need of more development progress," said Siringan, who is also Minister of Resource Development and Information Technology.

Hoping the villagers would appreciate and make full use of the amenities provided by the Government to improve further their living conditions, he also urged the village heads and Village Development and Security Committee

(JKKK) chairmen to do their parts by actively helping people under their respective jurisdiction to improve their economic status.

"The village heads and JKKKK chairmen need to be proactive in finding ways that can help villagers boost their income.

For example, they can go and seek advice from the Agriculture Department on any cash crops may be suitable to be cultivated by their villagers," he said.

Like for Kampung Tiang Lama, Siringan who is also UPKO Vice President believes the village has a potential for planting organic highland vegetables which can bringing in lucrative income for the villagers.

"I believe there is a potential for growing organic highland vegetables here. I hope the village head or JKKK chairman can seek advice from the District Agriculture Office on this and invite the agriculture officers to hold talks for the villagers on this," he said.

Siringan also approved several applications for allocations forwarded by the village's JKKK chairman Jaupin Hamid for improving basic amenities in the village during the event.

Siringan's Political Secretary, James Ingguru, and Community Development Leader (PPM), Georgina George, among others, were also present.
