Govt's policy to increase TPAs to 30pc
Sandakan: The Sabah government policy is to increase totally protected areas (TPAs) to 30 per cent of the State's land mass over a 10-year period until 2025 under its Central to the Heart of Borneo (HoB) initiative.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said at present, TPAs in Sabah covered 24.2 per cent of the State's land mass or about 1.8 million hectares, which represented the largest network of TPAs in the country.

He said as of December 2015, certified forests in Sabah, either partially or fully certified, had increased to over a million hectares with more than half a million hectares certified under the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).

"Since the inception of the HoB Initiative in 2007, the State Government, through the Sabah Forestry Department, has demonstrated remarkable progress," he said at the launch of the HoB Information Centre at The Atrium located within the Forestry department's headquarters, here, Friday.

He said the first Strategic Plan of Action (SPA) was produced a year later, designed to be a road map to accomplish the overall HoB vision, while the second SPA was drafted three years ago to cover 2014 until 2020.

Musa said the second SPA aimed to enhance the implementation of HoB activities, focusing on five main programmes, namely transboundary management, protected areas management, sustainable natural resources management, ecotourism development and capacity building.

"The SPA is used as a guide for the state towards proper implementation of HoB activities," he said.

Meanwhile, he said the launch of the new information centre was another milestone for the HoB initiative in Sabah.

He said with interactive and interpretative displays such as kiosks and posters, the centre features major achievements of the department in implementing the HoB initiative, apart from the diversity of flora, fauna and landscapes in Sabah.
