BEIJING: The Malaysian Charity Gala Dinner, jointly organised by the Malaysian Embassy in China and Malaysian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in China, has raised 1.9 million yuan (RM1.19 million) to help underprivileged children in health and education.Themed 'Embracing Hope for A Better Tomorrow', the fundraising dinner held last week (May 21) saw overwhelming response with the sale of 54 dinner tables.

Organising committee head, Datin Fairos Ishak said proceeds from the charity event would be used to help needy children undergo liver transplant at the Renji Hospital in Shanghai.

Fairos, who is wife of Malaysian Ambassador to China, Datuk Zainuddin Yahya, said the funds would also support education programmes run by the China Youth Development Foundation for the development of youth.

"Education and health are two ingredients pivotal in the formative years of a child, without which our very own future and world would be rudderless in the absence of good leaders," she said.

She said the funds would also help Malaysian children in need of liver transplant at the Renji Hospital, adding the expensive operation costs about 300,000 yuan, which was not affordable to many.

Determined in her vision to help those in need, following the story of a little girl named Jacqueline, who successfully underwent liver transplant at the Renji Hospital last year, Fairos believed such charity would bring more hope to unfortunate children who needed liver transplant to survive.

Guests at the charity dinner were entertained by Malaysian comedian Harith Iskander and singer Shila Amzah, who is well-known in China with her Mandarin songs 'Xiang Ai' (Love), 'Zaijian' (Goodbye) and Malay song 'Manusia'.

Organised for the first time in China by the Malaysian Embassy, few items were auctioned during the charity dinner, namely Manchester United and Liverpool jerseys and three oil paintings from Fairos. – Bernama
