Ganesha clinches overall title in Dinghy Open race

Kota Kinabalu: Ganesha Grant won the Dinghy Open (marathon Race) overall title in the Sabah Fest 2016 (Marathon Race) held at the Kinabalu Yacht Club (KYC) on Sunday.The youngster from KYC clocked a time of 1:33:31 to beat Navy Yacht Club Kota Kinabalu (NYCKK)'s Mohd Zaidey Bahadun who finished in 1:34:29 followed by Sabah Sailing Association (SAILA) 's Awang Hazirul Awang Tuah in 1:37:01.

Both Ganesha and Zaidey competed in the Laser Standard class while Awang in the Laser Radial class.

SAILA's Mohd Azmi Mohd Kahmis ruled in the Optimist marathon race with Samuel Wong from KYC and Veno Kualah from KYC finished in second and third place respectively.

Azmi was the winner in division A and Veno in division B while winner in division C, Laurenz Leonardo Daim finished in sixth overall.

The Novice Marathon race was won by another SAILA member Ahmad Faris Fazuri.

Second place went to Syazwi Thaqif Dhairul from SAILA and Carven Lau Jhing Wen of TYC in third.

In the International 470 class series race , NYCKK 's Mohd Mostaman Ismai continued his reign in the class and this time with crew member Long Wan Ying.

They finishing ahead of fellow clubmates Wan Mohd Fazeli Wan Zin / Irwan Satia and Muhd Danial Rosli/ Muhd Amirul Haqim Abd Rahman while the veteran title went to Sandakan Yacht Club (SYC) 's Michael R. Hastie and Dr Ho Siang Boon.

Ganesha also took the Laser Standard series race title with Zaidey in second place followed by Khairul Nizam Abd Karim, and the top two winners in the Laser Radial class were Muhd Zahimul Hakim Zainal and Ang Tsun Kiat.

Awang Hazirul Awang Tuah clinched the Laser 4.7 series race title followed by Ambigavalli Grant and Dayang Nur Erhaziqah Erwan. Ahmad Faris Fazuri was the winner in the Novice series race class, beating Carven Lau Jhing Wen and Syazwi Thaqif Shairul into second and third place.

The Windsurf series race was won by Muhd Fadzlin Hassan followed by Hassan Salleh and Guido Wiesenreiter while the top three in the Phantom series race were Abidin Aliakbar, Md Hanif hj Abdul Latip and Timothy Chung.

Overall top three places in the Optimist series race were divison A winner Mohd Azmi Mohd Kahmis, Samuel Wong and division B winner Tim Wong while division C winner Mohd Afzan Amir Harun in 13th overall.

The closing ceremony was graced by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Sabah, Datuk Pang Yuk Min representing Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.

In his speech read by Pang, he praised KYC for their role in promoting tourism sport in Sabah.

"KYC played an important role in promoting tourism sport in Sabah and the Sabah Fest Open Regatta 2016 championship this time is able to encourage the arrival of sailors and visitors from outside of Sabah to enjoy the festivity of Harvest Festival in this state."

He added that boat sports is a healthy and environmental friendly sport to build characters among the youths, and sailing can able be a stepping stone to hone skills especially self-discipline and experience for those who are interested in the sport.

Also present were KYC Commodore Bobby Willie, Sabah Saling Association President Christopher SY Chin and top officials from NYCKK.
