Kota Kinabalu: Physical strength alone does not guarantee the success of the State athletes who are competing in the coming Malaysian Games (Sukma) in Sarawak.Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan said, athletes should also be well-equipped with 'inner' strength.

"If we go to Sarawak without proper preparation for inner strength, I am worried that some of you might have disciplinary problems or even use illegal substances… instead of boosting the reputation of the State's team, you would only bring shame to us," he said during Iftar with State athletes and officials at the Likas Sports Complex, here, on Tuesday.

Citing the programme, Tawfiq said it is a good avenue to enhance the awareness of the State athletes on the importance of inner strength aside from physical strength.

"I am glad that our preparation for this year's Sukma is better than the previous editions.

"But I don's want to see us emulating the story of the tortoise and the hare… I want us to sustain our effort and make sure that we get the best out of it.

"Even though it is Ramadan, it doesn't mean that we rest totally. Ramadan is no excuse for you to stop training.

"We need to be creative and innovative in planning the best training method," he said while adding that he hoped the State contingent's momentum will be at its highest peak when they reach Sarawak.

Reiterating the Ministry's aim to bring home 40 gold medals and finishing among the top five teams, Tawfiq said "the other contingents will surely try their best to prevent us from achieving our objectives."

"I want our athletes are positive thinking – they can be at the same level with other athletes. Let us showcase the excellence of our athletes.

"A handsome reward awaits those who obtain medals but it is better if we fight for the State and not for anything else," he said.

At the same event, the Sukma athletes also received an early Hari Raya incentive from Tawfiq.
