Convicted rapist jailed for escaping from police

Tawau: A 36-year-old convicted rapist was handed two years' jail for escaping from police custody at the court here after he was found guilty of raping a 14-year-old girl.Mohd Faizal Iman, who was brought before Magistrate Muhammad Faizal Che Saad on Wednesday, received the maximum sentence after he admitted to committing the offence at 5.30pm on June 14 at the compound of the courthouse here.

He was ordered to serve the sentence consecutively with the rape sentence.

Inspector Aripa Changgi, prosecuting, told the court that prior to the incident, Faizal had been sentenced to 20 years' jail and ordered given 20 strokes of the cane by the Sessions Court after he pleaded guilty to raping the minor between noon and 1.30pm on June 2, this year at an oil palm estate in Kg Aman Jaya Semporna.

However, Faizal escaped from police custody while being escorted together with 34 detainees to the truck from the court cell.

The police managed to arrest Faizal three days later at the Tamaco plantation in Lahad Datu, at 1.45am on June 17.

A handphone was also seized from Faizal.

Faizal had committed an offence under Section 224 of the Penal Code which carries a jail term of up to two years or fine or both on conviction.
