Lahad Datu: A woman's attempt to take her own life from the sixth floor of a hotel here was foiled by quick-thinking firefighters on Tuesday. District Fire and Rescue Station Chief Mohd Apandi Mahmood said a 7.17pm distress call prompted a team to rush to the scene.

"The team arrived six minutes later and tried to talk the 21-year-old, who was sitting at the window ledge, out of it.

"They managed to calm the woman before pulling her to safety," he said, adding that the operation ended at about 7.47pm.

In November last year, a 43-year-old unemployed Filipino with no documents was also rescued by firefighters after he tried to jump from the fourth floor ledge of a hotel in Kota Kinabalu.

That same month, a 26-year-old local Suluk suffered burns to his body after he set himself on fire in his rented room on the fourth floor of the Api-Api Apartment in the State Capital.

At least seven known unnatural deaths were reported in the State this year, including the latest one involving a suspected Myanmar woman who succumbed to her injuries after falling from the eighth floor of a condominium along Jalan Sulaman on April 29.

On April 21, a Caucasian also succumbed to his injuries after falling from the 12th floor of a condominium in Tanjung Aru, while a man believed to be in his 50s, died after he fell from the sixth floor of a shopping mall in the city on March 21.

The incident took place barely a week after a 53-year-old Sarawakian man succumbed to his injuries after falling from the 13th floor of a hotel along Jalan Lintas in Kepayan.

A 14-year-old boy was also found hanged in his room at a residential area in Sandakan earlier the same month.
