Tawau: Police have classified as sudden death the case of a man who was electrocuted after falling into a drain which had illegal wiring connections at Jalan Apas here, on Sunday. District Police Chief ACP Fadil Marsus said the incident took place at about 1pm when the man slipped and fell into the drain which had wiring connected illegally from an electric pole nearby.

He said early investigations showed that the man was reaching out for something at the side of the drain, when he slipped and fell into the drain before getting electrocuted.

"The incident was witnessed by others who were afraid to help him for fear of getting electrocuted themselves…the man who was subsequently taken out from the drain, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics from the Tawau Hospital," he said.

The man, known by villagers are Mansah, had just left his sister's house at Mile 4, after sending toys to his niece and nephews.

The man who stayed in Kg. Ice Box was said to have frequently visited his sister's house.

The man was taken out of the drain by four auxiliary police personnel from the Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd at about 2pm after they were alerted of the incident at about 1.20pm.
