Armed grab at convenience store: 2 held

Kota Kinabalu: Two people have been arrested following last week's armed robbery at a 24-hour convenience store in Jalan Lintas. City Police Chief ACP M. Chandra said the 22-year-old man and his accomplice, a 16-year-old boy, entered the store on June 21 with the intention to rob the store of its cash. Armed with a machete and a butcher knife, they were believed to have made off with cash amounting to RM782."The first suspect entered the shop and brandished the machete at one of the cashiers while the younger suspect manned the door. The first suspect then took the money from the cash register before they both fled the scene.

"A public tip-off led to the arrest of the first suspect in Putatan on June 26 and police also took from him the weapons believed to have been used in the robbery," he said during a press conference here, Tuesday.The boy was later apprehended in Kg Ganang on June 27. Both suspects will be remanded until July 4.Chandra said during the robbery, the boy strangely wore a helmet although he came to the shop in a car.The car was parked a bit further from the shop. He then covered his face with a mask and wore the helmet before committing the robbery.

"This is a new modus operandi. Maybe he intended to fool the police into thinking that he had come to the scene of the crime on a motorcycle," he said.He added that the older suspect was a former worker in the shop but he only worked for one day before resigning.
