Kota Kinabalu: The Barisan Nasional (BN) Government must curb the increasingly disturbing and unhealthy elements that threaten to disrupt unity and harmony of the multicultural society in Sabah."As Sabahans raised in an atmosphere where we respect the diversity of race and religion, we are troubled by various radical and racist statements which could threaten the harmony of the people in the country," said Sabah Opposition leader Datuk Lajim Ukin in his Hari Raya address.

He said Islam had been tainted by opposite perception committed during the fasting month, for example the way Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng was arrested, which "was damaging in view of Ramadhan".

"The increasing unhealthy elements not only disrupted the harmony of the people in the country, but it also created uneasiness among Sabahans and Sarawakians.

"Sabahans have agreed to form Malaysia with the hope that our children will be able to live peaceably.

Even though we are separated physically by the sea, we are one as Malaysians," he said.

Therefore, during this month, Lajim urged all Malaysians to remember the objective of Malaysia and to become better citizens of the country and called on the people to combat tyranny and oppression which would spell the disintegration of the nation.

"We have strived to build the nation as it is today and we will not allow any party to disrupt the harmony we have developed for so long. Sabahans and Sarawakians must rise and share their experience in living in diversity," he said.

Wishing all Sabahans Selamat Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Lajim who is also State Leadership Council for Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Sabah, urged Sabahans to continue visiting one another during this festive season.

"Hopefully, this month will bring changes in our thinking and strengthen the relationship with one another regardless of race, religion and political ideology.

"Let us also pray that (PKR de facto leader) Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be released (from prison) soon so that we can continue our national reformation agenda," he said.
