MEMBAKUT: Sabah Islamic Affairs Department (Jheains) has applied for 275 Islamic religious teachers to plug the shortage of such teachers in Islamic religious schools in the State.Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister, Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif, said it is imperative to cater to the need as some of the salaries of the present teachers are being borne by the Sabah Tithe Centre (PZS) and Kafa (Fardhu Ain Class), among others.

He said some teachers who are being paid by Islamic agencies and organisations have been borrowed to teach some Islamic subjects in those schools that are facing the shortage, including using Islamic preachers to meet the need.

"There are over 700 teachers in all Islamic religious schools in Sabah and there is a shortage of over 200 teachers to meet the need of enhancing Islamic education in the State.

"Jheains has applied for a total of 275 Islamic religious teachers to be placed in those schools in need of such teachers.

"We truly hope that the State Government would consider all but if only half were approved, the department would also be grateful as long as the shortage could be addressed," he said.

Arifin, who is also Membakut Assemblyman, said this to reporters after opening a meet and Hari Raya celebration with Jheains Islamic religious teachers from the lower interior area at a multipurpose hall here.

In regard to teaching positions and salary scales faced by Islamic teachers under Jheains, he said such vital issues would be brought to the attention of the State Secretary so that appropriate action can be taken.

He said this would be among the steps taken by the department to address the issues faced by teachers for many years.

"We will help the affected teachers as I was made to understand that many have served more than 10 years but their salary scale and posts have not been changed to better grades, accordingly.

"In fact, Jheains's Principal Assistant Director (Administration & Development) has also explained and clarified in the event that most of the problems brought by the teachers to the attention of the department, including the arrears of their salaries, have been resolved.

"Nonetheless, we will continue to champion their problems by bringing the matter to the State Secretary to be addressed," Arifin said.
