Five new Islamic schools for Sabah

Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Islamic Religious Affairs Department (Jheains) has been urged to immediately identify Islamic schools in Sabah that are in need of repair and upgrading.Making the call, Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif said it is imperative the department does so including monitoring the physical conditions of 140 Islamic religious schools, six Islamic secondary schools and 14 Islamic kindergartens in the State.

"I am calling on the department with its newly appointed director Yusof Abd Abbas to enhance the quality of Islamic education in Sabah.

"That is why I am urging the department to monitor and look out for those Islamic schools in need of repair and upgrading works so that funding can be applied and channelled to meet their needs," he said.

Arifin who is in charge of Islamic affairs in Sabah, said this to reporters after opening the 28th celebration of Islamic Teachers Day with its theme 'Teachers the Builder of the Nation and Race' held at Sa'adah Hall in Wisma Muis here on Wednesday.

Over 300 teachers under Jheains, principals and headmasters of Islamic religious schools were celebrated at the event that was also attended by Yusof, Principal Assistant Director (KPP) for Education Division Ag. Omar Pg. Gana and other senior officials.

Arifin said the department will also include schools using some areas of mosques in Sabah as classrooms to teach their students.

Following this, he said about five new Islamic schools under the department will be constructed in Sabah.

"I pay serious attention to schools that are using mosques as their classrooms to teach young students on Islamic subjects and values and I have asked Jheains to give priority on this matter.

"I was made to understand that the department has listed a new school to be considered in Kuala Penyu as presently the school is using a mosque in the district as classroom to teach Islamic students from three villages.

"Apart from the Kuala Penyu case, another Islamic religious school will also be erected in Binsulok to cater to the needs of Muslim students, there. All in all…about five new schools will tentatively be constructed in the State once funding is provided," he said.

As for one Islamic school in Peladuk, Kota Belud that was razed last year, Arifin said the department has also applied for a funding of RM2 million to have a new school built in the district.

Earlier, in his speech, Arifin asked the new Jheains Director to focus on vital matters, among them:-

- To ensure the shortage of over 200 Islamic teachers is fully addressed.

- The department must look into the welfare and needs of Islamic teachers including their salary arrears and their teaching posts issues.

- Make efforts to expand the Integration Islamic Religious Schools known as 'Sekolah Agama Negeri (SAN) Integrasi' teaching academic and Islamic subjects in other districts.

- To ensure Islamic schools have sufficient infrastructures and facilities that provide comfort and safety for students.
