Kota Kinabalu: Its show time ... lets get ready to rumble!So said Sabah Boxing Association President Datuk Orlando Harumal when announcing to journalists that the preparations for the Mayor's Cup tournament is now ready to kick-off.He said a total of 117 local amateur boxers coming from 13 various teams throughout Sabah will be fighting in the ring to grab this year's Mayor Cup Challenge Trophy at the Kota Kinabalu Community Centre.

He said the tournament will also feature the participation of six young amateur lady boxers during the 3-day boxing event which will start at 2pm today (Friday).Orlando said amongst the participating teams for this year's event are teams from Tuaran, Tenom, Tambunan, Sandakan, Big Hill Club, Papar, Keningau, Kota Belud, Kota Marudu, Ranau, Police and Kota Kinabalu.
"The matches will be held daily from 2pm to 6pm," the President said.According to him the yearly tournament is designed to promote boxing among young Sabahans and only boxers weighing 49kg to 91kg are qualified to participate.

"During the Mayor's Challenge Trophy, we will identify nine boxers with quality skills to participate in the coming Malaysia Cup to be held either next month or September in Kuala Lumpur," he said. Orlando said Kota Kinabalu City Mayor Datuk Yeo Boon Hai will personally hand over the challenge trophy to the winning team during the closing ceremony on Sunday.

According to him, the first Mayor's Cup tournament was organised in 2002. The challenge trophy of last year's tournament was grabbed by the Tuaran team. He said the doors of the Kota Kinabalu Community Centre are open for the public to see the matches.

"It's free of charge to the public to come and see the tournament from today onwards until the closing ceremony on Sunday. Hence, myself and the officials of the Sabah Boxing Association are extending its warm invitation to all," he added.
