Giant show of patriotism in Tawau
Tawau: A giant flag measuring 108 feet wide and 50 feet long decorating the Tawau Municipal Council building (pic) has not only changed its physical landscape but also increased patriotism among the local community. Tawau Municipal Council President Alijus Sipil said the giant flag, which was measured to match the size of the building, is significant since the district has been picked for the launching of the national level National Day celebrations this year.

He said they will maintain the use of the giant Jalur Gemilang for important events, especially in conjunction with the National Day at district level.

"The effort to instil high patriotism among the people is a responsibility of all.

"We believe the selection of Tawau as the venue to launch the Independence Month this year is to provide opportunity to everyone in Malaysia to join in the merriment," he said.

Preparations for the celebration, which will be officiated by the Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today (Saturday), started since end of July.

Meanwhile, residents in the district are excited to welcome guests and visitors who are expected to attend the event.

Among them was Azrul Azsyafiq Sahraini, 24, who admitted to being proud of the giant flag decorating the Tawau Municipal Council building.

"The flag has brightened the atmosphere and is appropriate with the national-level independence month launching which will be held here," he said, adding that it has enhanced patriotism among the people.
