Karmentina, Andre bag top honours

Kota Kinabalu: State Sukma track and field athletes Karmentina Nadia Quadra and Andre Anura swept the top sports girls and boys honours at the Sabah Malaysia Sports School athletes appreciation event held at the Kota Kinabalu Polytechnic here on Tuesday.16-year-old Karmentina, who won a silver in the 400m hurdles and bronze in the 100m hurdles and the 4x400m relay in the recent Sukma in Sarawak, did well for the school in 2015 when she won gold and two silvers in the West Australia Little Athletics Association as well as bronze in the Thailand Sports Schools Games.

Andre, who only managed a sixth placing in the long jump in Kuching, last month won the panel votes with his achievement for the school last year by capturing two silvers in the SEA Youth Games in Singapore and gold in the Thailand Sports School Games, and he also made his debut for the country in the IAAF World Youth Championship in Colombia.

Six names each for the boys and girls categories were nominated for the event and the other nominees were Wong Venn Chieh (swimming-boys), Michelle Yong Fui Teng (swimming-girls), Muhd Danial Asyraf Nor Azmi (diving-boys), Nur Fazriyati Jali (diving-girls), Mohd Azizul Basri (hockey-boys), Nir Asfarna Isahyifiqa Isahhidun (hockey-girls) and Rosdinah Adeline Jerus (football-girls).

The event was graced by Dr Mehander Singh a/l Nahar Singh who is the Director of Sports division in the Malaysian Education Ministry.

Also present were the School's Principal Mohd Darwis Cholle and other invited guests including Sabah Sports Council Director Terrance Putin.
