Kota Kinabalu: Director of State Public Welfare Services Department, Mohamad Noor Wahab said there are five Activity Centres for Senior Citizens in Sabah, namely PAWE@UTC (KK), Papar, Sandakan, Tawau and Beaufort. "Each year, the Department channels an allocation of RM33,000 to each PAWE to assist the non-governmental organisations (NGOs) concerned in running the respective centres," he said.

He said this in his welcome address during the official visit of Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development, Senator Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun to the PAWE, UTC, here.

The text of his speech was read out by his Deputy, Sitiameh Hj Ruman.

Mohamad Noor said the establishment of PAWE is in line with the National Policy for Senior Citizens and National Action Plan for Senior Citizens.

He said the rationale was that the silver-haired have the ability to contribute their voluntary service and expertise to the local community provided they are still healthy and energetic.

"The National Policy for Senior Citizens recognises senior citizens as citizens from diverse backgrounds who have the right to enjoy a prosperous life, and are respected as well as having the capacity to continue contributing to nation-building," he said.

Mohamad Noor encouraged the local community to involve themselves actively in the programmes of the Activity Centre for Senior Citizens (PAWE) to truly reflect society's care for the elderly population.

In his briefing for the Deputy Minister, the State Public Welfare Services Department's Principal Assistant Director (OKU and Senior Citizen Division), Zulkiflie Hassan said PAWE serves as a facility for senior citizens to get together and interact socially as well as to carry out useful activities, especially those who are left at home when family members go out to work to earn a living.

He said the Centre is open from Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm, and also on Saturday and Sunday, if there are programmes over the week-end.

Activities include Al-Quran recitation, exercise using the treadmill, bicycle health, health examination, dance class and karaoke session.

According to Zulkiflie, some 317 members of the public had their blood tested under PAWE's blood donation programme, and 42 of them had donated blood in support of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEWH) Blood Bank.

Chew also toured other facilities at the UTC such as the State Public Welfare Services Department's Service Counter, Taska Anak Ku Sayang where she was briefed by Datin Rahimah Quadra, the Director of Sunshine MasterCare, which operates the nursery, the Sabah Women's Affairs Department (Jhewa) where she met Senior Officer Dg Norsiah Ag Duraman, who represented the Director, Hjh Masnah Matsalleh, and Kafe@Teen under the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN).
