Kota Kinabalu: Makna, the National Cancer Council, is organising a Klimb Kinabalu – Fight Against Cancer campaign which will take place from Aug 17-20. This year's climb would be the fourth for Makna since this campaign was initiated in 2011.

The climb, led by Makna Deputy General Manager, Vemanna Appannah who is an avid climber himself, has registered a total of 13 climbers that comprises Makna staff, volunteers, and members of the public who pledged to raise funds and awareness for the council.

Apart from this, also in the pipeline is the launch of Digital Mobile Mammogram Screening Units for Sabah and Sarawak.

By making this service available in East Malaysia, Makna hopes to be able to reach out to the lower-income groups who may have difficulty accessing screening facilities.

Makna recently organised its third annual charity dinner in an effort to raise funds for cancer patients.

A non-profit social enterprise established over 20 years ago to assist underprivileged cancer patients nationwide, Makna has to date has assisted in 8,900 cases from Sabah and Sarawak.

Makna strives on mobilising resources and spearheading initiatives that lead to easing the burden of cancer patients and their families emotionally and financially.

The fundraising night, which culminated in a dinner, was organised by Matahari Ismail, an active Makna volunteer in Sabah, to raise funds and create awareness and a platform to enable the public to come forward to help those in need.

Funds raised from this effort will ensure uninterrupted supply of financial assistance, surgical equipment, liquid food supplements, prostheses, and prescribed drugs for cancer patients in addition to providing young cancer survivors with scholarships to pursue their tertiary education.

Matahari has been an active volunteer with Makna since 2012. Together with her husband Helmie A.

Yusof, they have been involved in various fundraising and volunteer activities in Sabah, from organising cancer awareness talks in the community to visiting patients in their homes or in hospitals.

Thus far she has raised RM30,000 from this fundraising initiative.
