New state seats will help elected reps: Speaker
Kota Kinabalu: The 13 additional State seats will help elected representatives to be more focused in looking after their respective constituencies.State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Syed Abbas Syed Ali (pic) said presently, elected representatives have no choice but to look after their seats that are big in size.

"The additional seats of 13 will make Sabah have 73 State seats to be contested and this will facilitate the elected representatives in better discharging their responsibilities and duties.

"When we compare with Sarawak that has now a total of 82 seats, Sabah is still lagging behind," he said.

Syed Abbas, who is also Balung Assemblyman, said this after paying a courtesy call on Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin at the Istana Negeri, Wednesday.

He presented Juhar with the gazette and five bills that were passed in the State Legislative Assembly this month, namely the amendment to the State Constitution, amendment to the Legislative Assembly (Elected Members Enactment 1965), Enactment Fees of Licence of Pipe Fitters, main layers and reconnection (Validation) 2016, amendment to the Rubber Industry Replanting Fund Ordinance and amendment to the Wildlife Conservation Enactment.

Syed Abbas also informed that the proposal for the 13 new state seats would be handed over to the Election Commission.
