Kota Kinabalu: Sabah is at risk of being hit by strong winds, formation of thunderstorms and squall lines until September. Sabah Meteorological Department Director Azemi Daud said this was due to the southwest monsoon and the presence of tropical storms over the South China Sea and Pacific Ocean since last May.

"The strength of the monsoon winds over the South China Sea will potentially form thunderstorms or squall lines along the coastal areas of the West Coast.

"This could cause storms at nights before landing on land in the morning.

"The alert on strong wind and choppy seas begins today with Southwesterly winds up to 20 to 50km per hour and waves up to 3.5 metres, which are dangerous for small boats, water recreational and sport activities," he said.

However, Azemi said the interior divisions and areas shielded by the mountainous range are free from the effects of the monsoon.

Locations affected will include waters off Palawan in the Philippines and Reef North and Layang-Layang.

Azemi said squall line formation could be seen stretching up to hundreds of kilometres and will last longer than normal storms.

The State is expected to experience the monsoon changes in October with the Northeast wind starting in November until March 2017.

He said Kudat and the West Coast areas are expected to experience around 20 to 40 per cent more rain than usual from August until September due to the effects of the tropical storms.
