Neurosurgical services for Tawau and Sandakan
Kota Kinabalu: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Yahya Hussin said the Government was committed to ensure neurosurgical services in the State are also expanded to Tawau and Sandakan from the present unit in the State Capital. He said at present 20 district hospitals were set up to improve access to better healthcare along with the upgrading of the Lahad Datu and Keningau hospitals to specialist hospitals, but neurosurgery still remains centred in Kota Kinabalu.

"It is with this in mind that the neurosurgical unit intends to expand the neurosurgical service in the State by also setting up units in Tawau and Sandakan.

"I am made to understand that the end goal of this unit's objective and aspiration is to set up a neuroscience centre that will also incorporate neuro anaesthesia, neuro intensive care, neuro radiology and neuro rehabilitation all under one roof.

"The State Government is more than committed to help in making this a reality in the near future as this will benefit not only Sabahans but the entire region as well."

He said this in his speech at the 16th Scientific and Annual General Meeting of the Neurosurgical Association of Malaysia at the Pacific Sutera, here, Friday.

Yahya, who is also Minister of Agriculture and Food industry, added that the State Government has always been a strong advocate for the development of healthcare in the State and continually demonstrated its support for its expansion.

He said this is also shown with the setting up of several renowned private healthcare centres and hospitals in Kota Kinabalu offering services at par with those found in more developed nations and that medical tourism is also now a major part of the economy of the country.

Likewise public hospitals have also been upgraded in the State.

On the event, he said he was made to understand that this year's scientific meeting was focused on paediatric neurosurgery.

"I would like to encourage the neurosurgeons and future neurosurgeons here to consider the Sabah Women and Children's Hospital as a potential base of operations where ground-breaking achievements can be made given its nature and services offered."

Also present at the event was Head of Neurosurgery Department in Queen Elizabeth Hospital 2 Datuk Dr Pulivendhan Sellamuthu and Neurosurgical Association of Malaysia President cum Event Organising Chairman Datuk (Dr) Mohammad Saffari Mohammad Haspani.
