Couple marks 61 years of life together

Penampang: Not many couples can dream of celebrating their diamond wedding anniversary but former Permanent Secretary of the Sabah Local Government and Housing Ministry, Charles E. Labunda, 82, and wife Margaret Togium Langat, 76, did just that on Wednesday.The anniversary celebration marked the couple's 61 years of marriage. More than 100 guests, mostly family members, relatives and friends, attended the event held at the couple's residence at Kg Pudu, Guunsing, here, which began with a Mass presided by Monsignor Primus Jouil.

It was a simple yet meaningful celebration for Charles and Margaret who have five children and 13 grandchildren."This is quite a special occasion because very few couples can still celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary. Don't know if any of us could reach that milestone," a guest was overheard saying.Among those who attended the celebration was Sabah Assembly Deputy Speaker-cum-Parti Bersatu Sabah Secretary-General Datuk Johnny Mositun.

Charles had always been in the civil service throughout his working life, even during the British administration."I still remember. It was on 18th October 1954," he said.

He started as a clerk in the colonial administration with a basic salary of slightly more than 1 dollar and worked his way up the civil service ladder over the next 34 years.Toward the end of his career, Charles deservingly became the Permanent Secretary of the State Local Government and Housing Ministry. Before this, the couple had celebrated their silver (25 years) and golden (50 years) wedding anniversaries.While the rare blue sapphire anniversary awaits them in four years' time, Charles prefers to take life one day at the time and always be grateful to God for health and peace of mind and heart.
