Sabah's Natahsya shines

Kota Kinabalu: Sabah's Natahsya Soon shined at the recent Asia Mountain Bike Series Championship held in Ranau, last weekend.She won the individual downhill women elite and the national title as well as finishing third in the cross country Olympics women elite category under the banner of team Faithwellness/Taokas.

A total of 544 participants from Brunei, Great Britain, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kazakhstan, Singapore, Timor Leste, Vietnam, Peninsula Malaysia, Labuan, Sabah and Sarawak took part in the three-day event from Aug 26-28 at the Ranau Sports Complex (XCE & XCO), Kg Kilimu (DHI) and Damai Eco Ranch (CFA).

The international event was organised by the State Youth and Sports Ministry with the support of State Tourism, Culture and Environment Ministry as one if its yearly international sports event in line with the objective of the State Government in promoting sports and also to showcase Sabah as a destination for mountain biking.

The event consisted the 1st series of the Asia Mountain Bike series 2016, the UCI Junior Cross Country world series, the Malaysian National Mountain Bike Championship 2016 and a Cross Country Cycling For All (CYFORA) sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) and the Malaysian National Cycling Federation.

Natahsya's teammate from the Philippines Eleazar Barba Jr also took the individual downhill men elite title.

Other winners were Norshahriel Haizat Ahmad Nazali from Selangor in the men elite Malaysia downhill and Jali Lukas of Sabah in the men master Malaysia downhill.

Kedah riders dominated the cross country event with Masziyaton Mohd Radzi representing SBS Giant Racing Team clinching the women elite Malaysia national title in the cross country eliminator and the cross country Olympics.

Their women riders Siti Nuradibah Akma Mohd Fuad and Nurul Izzah Mohd Asri won the women junior and women youth Malaysia national champion title respectively in the Cross Country Olympics.

Mohamad Fauzan Ahmad Lufti of Penang won the Men Elite Malaysian National title for both the cross country eliminator and cross country elite. Mohd Faiziky Jumah of Sabah and Mohd Khairul Aniq Md Ghazali of Terengganu won the men youth and men junior cross country Olympics Malaysian title respectively.

In the Asia Mountain Bike series, Indonesian Adi Kusnadi representing Rapidino won the men master cross country while Ariana Thea Patrice Dormitario representing Team Ariana Sepcialized of the Philippines won the women elite category with Mohamad Fauza Ahmad Lufti of Malaysia taking the men elite cross country Olympics title.

The series will continue on Sept 10-11 in Dili-Timor Leste, Palu-Sulawesi on October 8-9 , and the final series to determine the overall champion will be held in Bukit Siol, Kuching, Sarawak on Nov 5-6.
