Mahathir is getting desperate, says Salleh

Kuala Lumpur: Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's attendance in court Monday, in support of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, comes as neither a shock nor a surprise. "This is what we would call political expediency," said Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak. In a blog posting this evening, Salleh said the meeting between Dr Mahathir and Anwar has shown how desperate Dr Mahathir has become.

"Dr Mahathir knows that his new party, Parti Pribumi, cannot go far on its own," he said. Salleh said that it is for this reason that Dr Mahathir needs to latch on to Pakatan Harapan, "just like a space shuttle needs a rocket." "That is why Mahathir is trying to build a bridge with Anwar — so as to court Pakatan," he said. Salleh said that with the move, Dr Mahathir has finally admitted that he does not really have the strength to make his party a success. "He needs to 'tumpang' (hitch a ride) on Anwar and Pakatan. Salleh said that Dr Mahathir shaking Anwar's hand was akin to what had happened back in 1998, one day before Mahathir destroyed Anwar. "Mahathir's kiss is a kiss of death," he said.
