Tawau UTC lifts town's status

Tawau: The Urban Transformation Centre, here, which began operating on Aug 15 is not only a new landmark, but is also a significant transformation feature that eases the public's official dealings with government departments and agencies under one roof.These include the Immigration, Road Transport, National Registration, Health and Water Supply departments and the Royal Malaysian Police which all operate daily from 8 am to 9 pm, except for public and festival holidays.

Tawau resident, Nasrul Wahidin, 24, said the UTC offered a lot of convenience and benefits to the local community as they needed to go to only one place to get government-related things done, thus saving time and costs.

"Also after that, the public especially the womenfolk can go straight down to the market to shop for daily necessities," said the youth from Tanjung Batu.

The Tawau UTC building was previously Tanjung Market, which was renovated in May to become an integrated complex that houses several government departments and agencies, and with the market on the ground floor.

A trader at Tanjung Market, Nancy Nurdin, 28, said she would be able to get things done at the government departments and agencies without having to leave her stall for long.

Another trader, Noraidah Salleh, 56, sees the market as a better attraction now for those visiting the UTC for government services, as well as visitors from outside Tawau.

Private sector worker, Muliyadi Muslimin, 30, regards the Tawau UTC as an innovative effort to transform the town, besides delivering services in a more systematic and efficient manner, thus uplifting the town's status.

Resident Sobariah Abdul Rahman, 22, said the UTC did not only benefit people living in Tawau but also in nearby areas like Semporna, Kunak and Lahad Datu.

She said she was also proud that Tawau, the third biggest town in Sabah, was developing more rapidly now, besides being a well-known farming area.

However, she added, the Tawau Municipal Council should carry out improvements like creating more parking bays around the UTC building to ensure smooth traffic flow. – Bernama
