Tambunan emerge winners in Pairin's Cup

Keningau: Tambunan boxers emerged champion in this year's Pairin's Zone Interior Cup Trophy held at the Keningau Community Centre Saturday and Sunday.The boxing bouts which kicked-off at 1pm Saturday and continued the following day was participated by boxing associations from Tambunan, Keningau, Nabawan and Tenom.

Tambunan team leader Fabian Peter in congratulating the boxers said he was satisfied with the performances of his boxers during the tournament.

"Our Tambunan boxers did their best although we experienced some disappointments. It's part of the game anyway," Fabian said.

The sports competition which is organised annually by the Sabah Boxing Association spearheaded by its President Datuk Orlando Harumal and strongly supported by all the officials and members including supporters is always designed to promote boxing among the youths in Sabah.

A total of 9 exciting boxing bouts were carried out during the Pairin Zone Interior Cup during the weekend with Tenom grabbing the second placing and Keningau in third place.

A selection trial to choose nine potential medallists to represent Sabah in the Malaysia Cup scheduled to be held in Perak October 8 to 13 was also carried out during the competition.

The Pairin Zone Interior Cup Trophy was declared opened by Guntor Arif on behalf of the Keningau District Officer Yusop Osman who could not officiate due to earlier appointments.

Also present during the opening and closing ceremonies was the association's energetic President.

Meanwhile, the names of the nine potential medallists who will represent the "Land Below The Wind" in the forthcoming Malaysia Cup are finally out.

The Sabah team dubbed 'Lucky 9' were chosen from among the 16 amateur boxers coming from the various boxing associations here during the selection trial held in Keningau on Saturday and Sunday.

Orlando said the selection of the boxers were based on stamina, punching speed, offensive and defensive strategies, weight and height, foot work, sportsmanship attitude, and most importantly physical and mental fitness among others.

"We were very strict in the selection process because our priority is to choose qualified, discipline and medal achiever boxers and not simply a fighter," he revealed and strongly reiterated that "only the best among the best boxers we have produced" will be given the opportunity to represent Sabah in the October 8-13 national competition in Perak.

Orlando said the 'Lucky 9' will start daily stringent and rigid physical and mental training starting Thursdays at the Likas Sports Complex.

According to him, the week-long training sessions will be carried out by its State coach Larry Boy Atim and assisted by Fabian Peter, and Arthur Undang and also closely monitored by the association's chairman for boxing development Darshan Singh.

"I will also ensure that the training sessions will be properly carried out and give my utmost support to our chosen few boxing heroes who will do their best to bring pride to Sabah in the national level competition next month," the President who also brought pride to Sabah in many boxing local and national level competitions during his early days promised.

This year's Sabah team comprises of (49kg) Chin Chi Hau; (52kg) Lexvister Sikim; (56kg) Arick Apao and Khairul Azim; (60kg) Randall Kadayum; (69kg) Mod Firdaus; (75kg) Samuel Johnsen Michael; (81kg) Shamir Johnny; and (91kg) Steven Onn Jeinging.

Orlando said the Sabah team who will leave for Perak on October 7 will be spearheaded by Fabian Peter, Larry Boy Atim and Arthur Undang.

"Unless otherwise, with proper training, discipline and luck, I am optimistic that our team will come home with medals," he said.

Meanwhile, the President also extended a 'big thank you' to organising chairman John Andriano and his committee members for successfully organising the Pairin Zone Interior Cup held in Keningau during the weekend.
