Tawau: Semporna Member of Parliament Datuk Shafie Apdal is not prepared to disclose the name of the new political party he recently registered. He said he would do so only after its registration is approved by the Registrar of Societies.

Speaking to reporters during an Aidil Adha event at Kg Batu 1.5 Apas Road, Sunday, Shafie also denied making a last minute decision to form a new party.

He said the matter had, in fact, been discussed at length with other State leaders, including with Penampang Member of Parliament Darell Leiking.

Darrell quit PKR four days ago to join Shafie's new Sabah-based party.

"It took a bit of time to decide whether to take over an existing political party or to form a new one by only changing its name," he said.

He also said the formation of the new party would give him a political platform and response has been well received not only in the East Coast but also in the West Coast areas by people from all races and creed.

He expressed confidence that the people's support towards the new party will determine the change in the political landscape in the State in the next general election. More than 3,000 supporters including other opposition party leaders attended the event.

In SANDAKAN, Libaran Umno Divisional Deputy Chief Datuk Zakaria Mohd Edris said there is nothing unusual about the entry of new political parties as the election date draws closer.

"It is no surprise as the election date comes closer many new political parties will come out in groups," he said.

According to Zakaria, the new parties were set up to influence voters to vote for them, adding that this includes parties that bring back the Sabah for Sabahans issue.

Zakaria said this during a press conference Sunday.

"The only thing I noticed is that they keep on reiterating to divide the unity of the people.

"We (Umno) do not accept this because everyone in Sabah is united in diversity," he said.

Towards this end, he hoped communities would not be easily influence by the tactics used by these parties which also enter villages and townships giving false hopes and promises.

Zakaria said they will only come out during the election period and will be gone after the election.

He said the Barisan Nasional government has a development record and the coalition is united.

The State also receives development and allocation given by the ruling Barisan Nasional government.
