Defending champions Borneo Eagles gunning for hat-trick

Sandakan: Having clinched a place in the semifinals of the 34th Agong's Cup Rugby Championship, host team, the Borneo Eagles are all geared up to take on Johor today (Friday) for a place in the Final.Sabah Rugby Union (SRU) Deputy President, Dr. KH Tan, said the match will be played at the Eagles Rugby Arena at Bandar Utama, Mile 6, here.

Sabah are the defending champions and will be the first team ever to strike a hat-trick should they again successfully defend their crown this year.

"Our boys have been training really hard under coach, Brad Mika, a former New Zealand All Blacks player," said Tan.

"They had put everything into the training and we are satisfied with their performance," he added.

He said this after watching the team go through the final phases of their training at the Rugby Club pitch yesterday evening.

The earlier stages of the tournament were completed in Kuala Lumpur while the semifinals and final will be staged in Sandakan this weekend.

The top 4 teams that have qualified for the semifinals are Terengganu, Johor, Perak and defending champions, Sabah.

"The cream of Malaysia's rugby players will be in action and we invite the public to come and watch the match," Tan said.

The opening semifinal match will see Sabah taking on Johor at 4.30pm today.

This will be followed by the match between last year's runners-up Perak and Terengganu at 6.30pm.

The winner of the semifinals will meet on October 2 (Sunday) at 6.30pm.

this will be preceded by the 3rd and 4th place playoff at 4.30pm on the same day.
