Advice not to consume shells and clams

Kota Kinabalu: Members of the public are advised not to consume all types of shells and clams following a red tide alert issued by the State Fisheries Department. The department said laboratory test results from the Red Tide Health Unit of the department's research centre showed that toxin level in "tontol" (turritella) and "dalus" (meretix) samples taken from the coastal waters of Binsuluk in Membakut have been found to be dangerous for human consumption.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

The department said all types of shells and clams locally known as "kerang" "tiram", "dalus" and "tontol" are not to be eaten until sea water is confirmed to be clean.

However, fish, cuttlefish, prawns and crabs are safe for consumption provided their gills and insides have been thoroughly cleaned.
