Kuala Lumpur: Three men are set to create history as the first Malaysians to conquer the North Pole in April next year by skiing on the completely frozen Arctic Ocean, covering a distance of 222 km and 22 days. They are members of the Malaysian Seven Continents Exploration Club (KE7B), namely Muhammad Muqharabbin Mokhtarrudin, 34, Shahrom Abdullah, 37, and Muhammad Irwan Yusuf, 36.

"The North Pole expedition will involve skiing and pulling a sledge laden with essential items for 22 days," Muhammad Muqharabbin, who is also KE7B president, told reporters after a fitness training session at Bukit Tabur here.

He said they would try to cover a distance of between 20km and 30km a day.

Muhammad Muqharabbin said the team would be training both at home and abroad, including in Japan and the United States, to prepare themselves for the expedition.

"Each of us have experience. Shahrom has made it to the South Pole, while Irwan have traveled to Greenland.

So I think we are strongly compatible to ensure success of this expedition," said Muhammad Muqharabin, who had conquered Mount Everest in 2004.

The expedition to the North Pole is the sixth organised by the club after the 7 Summits 7 Continents Expedition in 2010, Swimming Across English Channel (2012), Felda Everest Expedition (2013), Felda Greenland Expedition (2014) and the South Pole 2015-2016 Expedition.

Meanwhile, KE7B adviser Datuk Akmar Hisham Mohd Yusof said the club had introduced a special prefix of registration number – GT (Generasi Terbilang) – which is open for bidding throughout this month until Oct 31.

"The special prefix for the number plates from GT 1 to GT 9999 is managed by the club in collaboration with the Road Transport Department. GT is synonymous with KE7B as this club has produced 23 icons of extreme sports since 2009," he said.

He said fund raised from sales of the registration number will be used to develop extreme sports at the international level and also to organise several expeditions until 2020.

"Those interested can place their bid through the official website www.platgt.com or contact the secretariat at 016-9035130 (Zulaikha Mokhtar) and 019-3645538 (Ismail Mokhtar)," he added. – AFP
