Shafie's Parti Warisan Sabah name change okayed
Published on: Tuesday, October 18, 2016

Putra Jaya: Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal's new party is Parti Warisan Sabah. The Semporna MP and former Umno vice president said the Registrar of Societies (RoS) has approved the Sabah-based party's name change, from Parti Pembangunan Warisan Sabah.

He would lead the party as president and his deputy is Penampang MP Darrell Leiking, previously of PKR.

Sulabayan assemblyman Datuk Jaujan Sambakong, Likas assemblyman Junz Wong and Kadazan-Dusun Murut Malaysia (KDM Malaysia) organisation president Datuk Peter Anthony are the three vice presidents.

Mohd Shafie said the party will work with "any other party" that intends to topple the Barisan Nasional government in Sabah.

"We are looking into it, we will talk with other parties. As long as they are with us in wanting to topple the Sabah Barisan government, we are willing to work with them," said Mohd Shafie, adding that they are "halfway done" in finalising its candidates list. The former cabinet minister expressed confidence on the people's support towards the party.

"I'm quite confident, from the visits on the ground, the people are on board. They want a local-based party.

Many want to see change in the state and surely, also the landscape at national level," he said.

Meanwhile, the registration is an important milestone in Malaysian politics, said Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Pribumi) sec-gen Datuk Dr Shahruddin Md. Salleh.

"We congratulate Shafie and his comrades for establishing another option for the people of Sabah.

Pribumi is excited as it can bring about positive change in the nation's political landscape," he said.

He added that Pribumi is confident that the new party has a good basis behind its struggle and that Warisan's cause is in line with Pribumi's.

"We look forward to extending our hand and building strong bridges of friendship. Let us unite to build a strong government with noble values," said Shahruddin.
