Kota Kinabalu: Patients are only given a month's supply of medicines in line with the Health Ministry's guidelines to cut down on any wastage and to ensure that there is enough medication to cater to all those seeking treatment."There has been a sharp rise in patients at the Luyang Health Clinic as a lot are being referred to us from the private sector," said a spokeswoman.

She did not rule out the possibility of some being given more than a month's supply of medication.

"Such requests, however, are considered on a case-by-case basis.

"The cost and availability of the medication will have to be taken into account when deciding whether to grant such requests," she said.

The spokeswoman was responding to a Daily Express reader's plea about the hassle she faced in travelling to the clinic to collect her husband's medication each month, who is recovering from a stroke.

The spokeswoman advised the patient's spouse to meet with the clinic's staff about this matter.

"She should bring her husband's case file with her to the meeting," she said.

She said those who found it troublesome to travel to the clinic could arrange to have their medication sent to their doorstep, via courier.

"Pos Laju provides this service, with a RM5 fee levied per delivery.

"Collection can also be made from the drive-through at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital I."

The spokeswoman said those wishing to know more either method of collection could speak to staff at the Pharmacy Section about this.

The complainant said she often had to drive round and round looking for a vacant bay to leave her car at the clinic.

"When I do succeed in finding a space in the hospital's grounds, I still have to wait for some time to receive my husband's medication," she said. "Some of my friends who go to the Clinic receive up to three or four months' supply of medication," she said and wanted to know if she could collect at least two months' supply.
