Beef rendang, adobo bring M'sians and Mexicans closer

Kuala Lumpur: When Mexican Ambassador to Malaysia, Carlos Felix Corona, first had a bite of beef rendang, he was overwhelmed with the taste, thinking that this was not Malaysian food but rather a Mexican dish."After tasting the dish a little bit, I ask what it was and I was told that it is a famous Malaysian cuisine called beef rendang.

I was surprised as the sauce tasted exactly the same as the Mexican adobo sauce," he said in a recent interview.

And with such similarity in food, the ambassador, who has been here for about three years, aimed to further promote people to people connection through gastronomic events such as the Flavours of Mexico, which entered its third successful year recently, as well as cultural events.

And for those who would like to dabble in trying out Mexican dishes, the embassy had come out with the third edition of a Mexican recipe book titled 'Flavours of Mexico in Malaysia' featuring main dishes such as tortillas, tacos, guacamole and many others by using local ingredients.

The ambassador said that following the positive response, the embassy planned to produce the fourth edition.

As for cultural events, the 15th Latin American Film Festival will be held at the Malaysia Tourism Centre (MaTIC) from Nov 11 to 18, showcasing some blockbusters from the Latin American countries.

However, this year, there would be a slight difference as a Malaysian film would be shown for the first time under the "guest country" category. The film selected is 'Redha' starring Namron and Nadiya Nisaa.

The envoy said that a decision was made last year to invite Malaysia to participate in the festival.

"We are also discussing with the National Film Development Corporation Malaysia (Finas) on how we can work together to promote production of films where we can learn from each other, especially on the cultural element," he said. – Bernama
