GEORGE TOWN: Several multinational companies (MNCs) are striving to empower local employees in the quest to implement the 100 per cent local employee policy, job-searching company IRC Group of Companies said. Its Chief Operating Officer, Michael Heah said the policy was aimed at reducing dependence on foreign labour by 2018 by providing local employees with career development opportunities.

"Local workers are here to stay unlike foreign workers," he said at career development programme here Thursday.

On the minimum wage policy, he said it had benefited both local and foreign workers with a factory operator in Penang earning about RM1,950 per month.

"This could help generate 1.5 million jobs for locals by 2020 and increase per capita income as stated in the 11th Malaysia Plan," he said.

Heah said IRC had proposed to relevant authorities to revise the locals to foreign workers ratio in the industrial sector from 70:30 to 90:10.

On graduate unemployment, he said the problem emanated from graduates' unwillingness to explore the areas beyond their scope of studies and a mismatch between courses and job skills.

He advised graduates not to be choosy with jobs and to seek opportunities in the electric and electronic sector which would be experiencing a boom upon the implementation of the Trans-Pacific Partnership in 2018.

Earlier, IRC signed memoranda of understanding with IKBN Bukit Mertajam, Politeknik Kota Bahru and ILP Kota Bahru to equip the students with soft skills. – Bernama
