Kota Kinabalu: DAP Sabah is disappointed with the cut in allocation in the Budget 2017 for electricity supply in rural Sabah from RM398 million in 2016 to RM250 million in 2017.Its Chairman Stephen Wong Tien Fatt said it was totally unfair and unacceptable for such cut in funding when most people in the State are living in the rural areas and still experiencing poor electricity supply.

Wong, who is also Sandakan MP, also voiced dissatisfaction over no allocation for the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan, even though Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak announced a RM2.5 billion allocation in the budget to upgrade hospitals and medical facilities.

According to Najib budget speech, the Government will build and upgrade hospitals in Perlis, Kuching, Mukah, Jempol, Muar and Johor Baru, but Sabah's hospitals received nothing.

"I had repeatedly called on the Government to upgrade the Duchess of Kent Hospital because its condition is very bad, facilities are old and often break down.

"I had also repeatedly requested the Government to replace two lifts in the hospital building which always broke down.

In fact, I had voiced out in the last Parliament sitting that it lacked ambulance and many other facilities," he said in statement, Friday.

Wong also said he noted that the budget allocation for the Pan Borneo Highway has been increased from RM800 million to RM1.5 billion for both Sabah and Sarawak.

Out of the total construction cost at RM27 billion, he said RM1.5 billion of allocation a year will take about 18 years to complete the project which clearly is too long.

"Sabahans and Sarawakians cannot wait that long and I have actually proposed that the Government allocate at least RM5 billion a year so that this project can be fast-tracked to be completed in five years' times.
