Kuching: The Ministry of Housing and Urbanisation Sarawak (MHU Sarawak) and the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB) Malaysia, Monday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance performance of the construction industry in the state. MHU Sarawak and CIDB Malaysia are to collaborate under the Construction Industry Transformation Programme (CITP) to promote sustainable practices, adoption of technology and innovation in construction and development of human capital.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said the MoU would help elevate performance of the state construction industry in line with the CITP goals.

"The key areas of collaboration include implementation of the Quality Assessment System in Construction (QLASSIC) and Safety and Health Assessment in Construction (SHASSIC).

"The partnership also marks an important milestone for the construction sector in Sarawak," he told reporters after the MoU signing ceremony here Monday.

Meanwhile, Works Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the CITP goals can only be achieved through collaboration among construction industry players and stakeholders.

He said to achieve the set target, there is a need for professionalism and the collaboration should not be just between the federal and state governments, but also local authorities in approving any project.

"When giving approvals, they must ensure that designs are of standard and the monitoring as well as supervision, complies with regulations.

"It is also important for all stakeholders, including material suppliers and contractors, to comply with the standards and design specifications," Fadillah said.

The CITP is a five-year plan formulated by the Works Ministry and CIDB to elevate the standard of the construction industry via four key thrusts, namely quality, safety and professionalism, environmental sustainability, productivity and internationalisation. – Bernama
